When it comes to homes, it seems the kitchen is usually ignored in terms of decorating. But, that doesn’t need to be the case! Your kitchen can be decorated to reflect the style of your home, while remaining practical. Today I’m sharing some tips for decorating your kitchen with lots of examples.

1. Remove Clutter
This is the big one. Clear the clutter off your counters if you can. For me, I took off anything I don’t use daily and stored it in an easy to access spot. Doing this step first lets you see how much space you have to work with and what areas can use a little something.
2. Lay Down A Runner
Look for something easy to care for. We have a low pile rug in our kitchen. I vacuum it frequently and occasionally steam clean it to keep it looking great.
3. Add A Pretty Hand Towel
Add a pretty hand towel for a pop of color and pattern.
4. Add Something to Store Cooking Utensils
I recently added a vintage crock by our stove to store cooking utensils—spatulas, wood spoons, etc. and it has been a game changer. I love having easy access to these things, and the crock adds a little character.
5. Add a Lamp
This one is a little polarizing—but I love the idea of a small lamp in the kitchen. It helps make the room feel less utilitarian. Chris Loves Julia has a great post about this. Check it out here.
6. Add Some Greenery
Adding a potted plant or a few decorated stems (or both!) is a great way to bring some life to your kitchen. I like the look of a small plant near the sink and a larger vase of stems on an island (if you have one). If you’re doing a larger vase on the island, tuck a decorative bowl next to it to help complete the vignette. (Thanks to Shea McGee’s book for that tip).
7. Add Artwork
Adding a small piece of art can help elevate your kitchen. If you don’t want to use a real painting—look for a fabulous print.
